Dog breeds and crate sizes

If you are getting a crate for a puppy, you may be tempted to get a small crate as that's probably all you need during the first few months. But most trainers and breeders now encourage ongoing crate training, it's really just a fancy term for getting your dog used to being in a crate, and it doesn't mean you have to lock it up in a cage every day. Once a dog gets used to sleeeping in a crate, the crate is really just a bed, so you can leave the door open pretty much all the time. So when the time comes (e.g. when you travel), you can put your dog in a crate and it will be perfectly calm inside because it's used to sleeping there.
For that reaosn, you may want to get a crate will fit your dog when it's fully grown. To help you work out which size you need, we have put together a size guide by breed below. But bear in mind that even dog size can vary even within the same breed, so this is just a rough guide and you should always double check with the breeder.
